For years now, dentists have had a comprehensive list of the kind of foods that you should avoid in order to protect your dental health. Candies and Sugary Sweets
This may seem like an obvious one, so that is why it is at the top of our list. Candies and Sweet goods are jam packed with sugar. If you are someone that has a sweet tooth, it is recommended that you only really indulge in sweets that melt quickly in your mouth. If you are someone that has the habit of enjoy lollipops and hard candies, then you could be causing severe damage to your teeth. It is down to your saliva to wash away any of the sugar in your mouth and if you are letting the sweet things sit in your mouth for too long, your saliva will not be able to do that.
Foods in particular that you should invoid include cake, desserts and sweets. We know that it is not realistic to completely remove these foods from your diet, as they are a nice treat, so you should try and brush your teeth soon after enjoying these foods.
We are all guilty of indulging in a delicious sugary drink from time to time. They have a great taste and are a good alternative to water when you want to drink something with a bit of flavor. However, constantly indulging in sugary drinks could actually be damaging your teeth on a large scale. Much like when you eat sugary food, sugary drinks linger in your mouth and encourage tooth decay.
People often believe they have found a way around it by choosing to drink sugar-free drinks or even drinks that are just low in sugar. Though this will certainly prevent decay, you are still easily exposed to tooth damage. This is because these drinks are acidic, which means that they can erode your teeth and cause damage.
In this instance, we will recommend that you do not brush your teeth after having fizzy or soft drinks. This is because when you have drinks with acid in them, it softens the protective layer that supports your teeth and prevents possible cavities. When you brush your teeth when this layer is soft, you are only removing it from the tooth, which means that you will be much more likely to get tooth damage and decay.
You should still brush your teeth after you have had sugary drinks, but give it half an hour to an hour before you do.
You may be surprised to see pickles on the list, but once you read the reasoning behind it, you will understand why. Pickles are stored in vinegar, that’s what gives them their signature flavor and preserves them. As we discussed above, acid can be extremely damaging to your teeth and vinegar is acid. Not only do pickles contain acid, but they also contain sugar. Both of these things mixed together are a recipe for disaster and will wear down your teeth’s enamel.
Not only can pickles damage the tooth itself, it can also stain your teeth, which can be unattractive and hard to fix.
We are often told how beneficial fruit is to our diet and how we should try and include it where we can. However, what is not often discussed is the damage that citrus can cause to teeth.
